It’s probably making the rounds at your office or your child’s school. It sends thousands of people to the hospital every year. Have you guessed the culprit? It’s the flu. This miserable virus is rapidly spreading throughout the U.S., and the harsh winter weather isn’t helping. Unfortunately, Indiana is not exempt. View the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s flu map to see how widespread the sickness is. How Can I Prevent the Flu? Want to build immunity? The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services has some tips:
  • Get the flu vaccination. Many grocery stores, pharmacies, and public health offices in Indiana offer flu shots for a reasonable price. Avoiding needles at all costs? Ask for the nasal spray instead; it’s completely painless.
  • Follow normal precautions. Simple things like exercising, disinfecting common surfaces, and frequently washing your hands go a long way toward flu prevention.
  • Treat illness quickly. If you do get sick, see a doctor as soon as possible. The physician may be able to prescribe antiviral drugs or certain medical supplies that will shorten the length (and intensity) of the virus.
